Samajwadi Party workers today thrashed a youth for raising the slogan of ‘Jai Sri Ram’ before their party head Akhilesh Yadav. From the way the sequence of events unfolded at the SP’s Kannauj meeting, it appeared that Yadav had provoked his party workers.
The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister arrived at the Samajwadi Party’s Women’s Conference in the district on Saturday. Akhilesh was addressing the gathering when the youth named Govind Shukla questioned Akhilesh on unemployment. Interrupted during his speech, Yadav asked the youth, “Kiske ādmi ho (Whose man are you)? Are you from the BJP?”
The youth replied by sloganeering “Jai Sri Ram”.
A heckled Yadav then asked the police to bring the youth to him. The SP chief then targeted the police and the government fiercely in his speech, describing the incident as “BJP’s conspiracy”. Yadav said, “A BJP leader has threatened to kill me by phone and message. My life is in danger. The threat message is saved in my mobile phone. I will address a press conference in Lucknow in a day or two.”
Yadav questioned the police, saying, “A BJP leader threatened me just now. Today, he wanted to jump over the cordon on my side. He could have killed me. What action will be taken against him? What section of the IPC will the police slap the youth with?”
Yadav has been floating conspiracy theories against UP Police since he lost power in the state. When the Yogi Adityanath government ordered the police to crack down all gangs in Uttar Pradesh, Yadav had alleged that the cops were “staging encounters“.
In the upcoming assembly by-elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party are not-reuniting, as both the organisations feel they do not benefit from each other. Their coalition could not stop the BJP from winning the state assembly poll or getting 62 seats from Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha election. Thereafter, BSP chief Mayawati announced that her party would fight the elections in future alone.
Before today’s incident, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alone was known to get irked on hearing someone chant “Jai Sri Ram”.
