The family of the 21-year-old female student who was shot dead by her jilted lover and his associate outside her college in Faridabad on 26 October has attributed the crime to ‘love jihad‘. They say that the Muslim family was forcing her to convert and marry the accused.
The incident took place late 26 October in the afternoon when the victim, Nikita Tomar, a final year student of B Com in the college, had exited the premises after appearing in an exam. A CCTV footage of the incident has gone viral on social media.
The woman had come out of her college after appearing for the exam when the incident took place, ACP Ballabgarh Jaiveer Singh Rathi said. She was taken to a hospital, but succumbed to her injuries, Rathi added.
The accused, who arrived at the spot in a car, tried to pull the woman inside in a possible bid to abduct her. The woman, however, resisted after which one of the accused shot her. The police have arrested both the accused. During the preliminary investigation, it has emerged that one of them was known to her.
“One of the accused identified as Tausif hailing from Sohna was known to the victim and a complaint against him had been lodged by the victim’s kin a few months ago for harassment and molestation but a compromise had been reached,” Rathi said.
Nikita Tomar: Another case of love jihad
A family member has alleged that the accused, who belongs to the Muslim community, had been forcing the girl to convert her religion for the last three years. When she refused to convert to Islam, the accused tried to abduct her and shot her dead in the broad daylight.
“He tried to forcibly make her sit in his car but she refused and then he shot her,” the victim’s father said. Nikita’s father had earlier in 2018 filed a molestation complaint against Tausif.
The FIR cites the father alleging that Tausif had tried to abduct Nikita Tomar, as the daughter had told the father. There was a lot of pressure on the family due to which they later withdrew the case.
According to the police, Tausif was very angry at Nikita Tomar as she had stopped taking calls from him and she had blocked his number. The accused knew that she will be taking her exam yesterday and he was waiting for her along with his friend outside the college.
The police have now handed over the investigation to the Crime Branch and are now waiting for the final post-mortem report.
Condemning the incident, BJP spokesperson Raman Malik said this is a ‘jihadi’ kind of activity and the police cannot be standing everywhere at all times.
Protests across town
Protests have erupted across the town after the friends of Nikita Tomar today staged a demonstration outside the Aggarwal College where she was shot dead and demanded justice for her. The students are demanding stringent punishment for those responsible for the heinous crime.
The protesting students have blocked the main highway from where all the trucks and cars pass towards Ballabhgarh-Sohna road area. The girls are not safe in the city anywhere, we will keep protesting until justice is served, said one of the protesting students.
