Officials coming late in Urban Development Ministry are going to have tough time. Their days of freedom to stay absent from office is over due to a new diktat of Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu that they would need to sign the attendance register daily, and the register would not be available after 9-15 am. The late-comers will be treated as absent.
This decision was taken after Naidu, in a surprise check on Monday, found that about 80 officials were not in their seats. After inquiry, they were found to be absent. A livid Naidu said that the government would strictly implement the timings and public money should not be wasted like this.
The minister’s surprise check comes after a similar exercise undertaken by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar. The I&B minister has already directed his departments to introduce biometric system in the office to ensure that the office timing is rigorously followed.
Bringing discipline in officials is the first task to streamline the administration. Disciplining the officialdom is very important for the BJP-led NDA Government as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid lot of faith in the bureaucracy to deliver the government’s promises.
