Yes Bank founder Rana Kapoor’s family buying a super-expensive painting from INC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra has made the Income Tax Department smell a rat. It is investigating how far the mutual association of the two families go.
If readers did not know, Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra is a seller of art! Her party explained that she had sold an MF Husain painting of her father Rajiv Gandhi to Rana Kapoor for Rs 2 crore. The INC said further that she disclosed the amount in her income tax return of 2010.
INC spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said Kapoor had paid for the painting by cheque.
Sources say the Kapoors do have close links with the Gandhi-Vadra family. Rana Kapoor had bought a painting from Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra for a mind-boggling Rs 2 crore.
Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate had interrogated Kapoor for almost 30 hours and then arrested him. Getting hints of a huge money-laundering scandal, the agency raided his house and those of his wife and daughters.
The ED probe into a case of Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Ltd (DHFL) revealed that the Kapoors floated multiple shell companies for the fraud and made properties, including one in London, worth more than Rs 2,000 crore. His houses have more than 40 expensive paintings, with quite a few of them received or bought from politicians.
The agency carried out a search operation at Kapoor’s Mumbai residence on Friday. It is investigating Kapoor, his wife and three daughters since it found that DoIT Urban Ventures (India) Pvt Ltd, a firm allegedly ‘controlled’ by the family, received over a Rs 600 crore as explained in this Sirf News report.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against DHFL, its promoter Kapil Wadhawan, Doit Urban Ventures (India) Limited and YES Bank founder Rana Kapoor for cheating and criminal conspiracy under various sections of the IPC and Sections 7, 12, and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
