Vacation of unauthorized occupants of govt houses improved over last 2 years

New Delhi: Law enforcement in respect of vacation of government houses in Delhi which were under unauthorized occupation has substantially improved over the last two years. This was revealed from the information furnished to Lok Sabha by the Minister of for Urban Development Babul Supriyo in a written reply to a question on illegal occupation of government houses.

Supriyo informed the Lok Sabha that a total of 1,531 houses were got vacated under the provisions of Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act during the last three years. These included  246 evictions in 2013, 539 in 2014 and 746 in 2015. He also stated that while only 10 houses of higher type (Type VB to Type VIII) were got vacated in 2013, it has increased to 69 in 2014 and 20 in 2015.

Babul Supriyo said that 1,207 government houses of different types are under unauthorized occupation which account for about 2% of the total houses under General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) in Delhi. These included 299 houses in the lowest categories of Type-1 and Type-1 S, 472 Type-2 houses, 202 Type-III houses, 189 Type-IV and Type-IV S, 20 Type-V (A and B), 5 in hostel accommodation category, 16 Type-6 (A and B) besides only 4 Type-VII houses and one Type-VIII house.

Of the houses under unauthorized occupation, 36 cases are before the Courts, 33 are with Kashmiri migrants and 27 are with journalists.

Former Home Minister Shri Buta Singh and Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Virbhadra Singh have moved the Court against their eviction from government bungalows in Delhi. One Type-VII accommodation is under the occupation of former Union Minister  Jaswant Singh who is seriously ill.

Besides taking necessary measures for eviction of unauthorized occupants by the concerned law enforcing agencies, penal damages for such unauthorized occupation are charged at the rate of 55 times of normal rate of license fee for Type-VII and VIII category of houses, 50 times for Type-IV (Special) to Type-VI, 40 times of normal license fee for Type-I to IV category houses.
