A day after the body of a 23-year-old girl, who was reported missing since 10 November, was found in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti, police have arrested a man in connection with her death after a brief exchange of fire in the wee hours of 16 November.
Police said that on 10 November, the now-dead girl had gone out of her house but did not return. Following this, her family lodged a missing complaint. Police registered the case. While the inquiry by cops into the case were underway, her body was found in Basti’s Kathwaliya village near her house on 15 November. Uttar Pradesh Police retrieved the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.
No clear evidence of rape: Uttar Pradesh Police
The post-mortem report has revealed the cause of her death asphyxia due to strangulation as the cause of death and doesn’t mention any external or internal injury, Basti SP Hemraj Meena said, adding that there is no clear evidence of rape in the report.
The SP Hemraj Meena added that the police probe revealed that she had gone to meet somebody on 10 November. “Our team started looking into it and traced a number that was close to the girl’s location. Today at 5:45 at Gaighat-Sikandarpur road, we got the information he was planning to escape. When police teams stopped him, he started firing at them. One police personnel suffered injuries,” Meena said.
Suspect arrested after gunfight; 2 cops suspended
In retaliation, police personnel opened fire and the suspect received bullet injuries on his leg. The police team nabbed the injured suspect, who was identified as Bhalchandra Yadav of Tigra village.
It may be noted that two police officials, including Kalwari station in-charge and ‘halka’ in-charge, have been placed under suspension over dereliction of duty in connection with the case.
Uttar Pradesh Police has constituted three teams to investigate the case, he said.
