Jammu-Kashmir Police file two UAPA cases for ‘celebrating’ Pakistan’s win in World Cup

Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered two cases against unknown persons under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for allegedly celebrating Pakistan’s over India in the ICC T20 World Cup on 24 October, officials familiar with the developments said.

The police filed the UAPA cases after a few videos on social media claimed that people in Jammu and Kashmir had celebrated Pakistan’s in the match last Sunday and raised slogans in favour of the Islamic republic after the match. Two celebratory videos, allegedly of MBBS students in two medical institutions in Srinagar, also went viral across social media platforms.

Media could not confirm the authenticity of the videos.

The officials cited above said the FIRs under UAPA and Indian Penal Code were filed at Soura and Karan Nagar police stations in Srinagar on 25 October. “Yes, an FIR under UAPA has been registered after there were purported celebrations and slogans following a cricket match. But the case is not specific to videos on social media,” said an official.

“HMs (home minister’s) with Kashmiri youth started with slapping UAPA against medical students for celebrating Pakistan’s win. Instead of trying to ascertain why educated youth choose to identify with Pakistan, GOI resorting to vindictive actions. Such steps will alienate them further,” PDP chief tweeted.

Mufti’s tweet was in reference to home minister ’s remarks that the Centre would rather talk to Kashmir’s youth than Pakistan, as suggested by National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah.

Kashmir Inspector General of Police Kumar confirmed that they have filed a first information report against the medical students.

The FIR also includes charges under Section 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code.

The police filed the UAPA case against the students at the Government Medical College hostel “who were crying and dancing” after Pakistan won the match, sources said.

Unidentified officials said that the suspects persons have not yet been identified and the police were conducting an investigation.

Police officials said that they were looking into purported videos of the incident. However, they added that many of the videos that have surfaced are from 2017.
