Twitter desists from pulling down Haryana minister’s tweet

'We have investigated the reported content and found that it is not subject to removal under the Twitter rules,' the micro-blogging site said about Anil Vij's statement condemning Disha Ravi

Micro-blogging site Twitter now seems wary of inviting the government’s wrath after the Narendra Modi government pulled up the company for its strict actions against rioters at the Capitol Hill while defending instigators of mobs in India. Senior politician and Haryana Home and Health Minister Anil Vij had earlier today sparked a fresh controversy with his tweet saying “anti-national” people like Disha Ravi should be destroyed from the roots.

Expectedly, the lib-left pounced on the opportunity and reported the tweet en masse, raising questions on the minister’s conduct. Slamming what has come to be known as social media “amplification” campaign by Disha Ravi and gang against the parliament-passed farm laws, Anil Vij had tweeted on Monday, “Desh virodh ka beej jiske bhi dimaag mei ho uska samool nash kar dena chahiye phir chahe vah #Disha_Ravi ho ya koyi aur. (Whoever has the anti-national seed in the must be destroyed from their roots, whether it is Disha Ravi or someone else).”

INC’s Rajya Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) tweeted, “Surely tweets like this are far more harmful to our democracy than anything in the “toolkit” @DISHARAVI21 retweeted?”

Earlier, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal (@ArvindKejriwal) had tweeted about the arrest of Disha Ravi, “Arrest of 21 yr old Disha Ravi is an unprecedented attack on Democracy. Supporting our farmers is not a crime.”

One of the pillars of the INC dynasty, Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra (@priyankagandhi) tweeted on Disha Ravi: “Darte hain bandookon vale ek nihathi ladki se faile hain himmat ke ujale ek nihathi ladki se (Those with guns are feared from an unarmed girl, the light of courage is spread by an girl).”

Journalist Ajit Anjum (@ajitanjum), with 8,57,000 Twitter followers, questioned Vij: “Kaise nash karna hai? Mob lynching se? Supari dekar? Jail mei jeevan bhar sadakar? (How do you plan to destroy? By mob lynching? By contract killing? By incarcerating the person for life?)”

INC politician from Nadu, Mohan Kumaramangalam (@Mkumaramangalam) wrote, “A minister in haryana (sic) believes #DishaRavi must be destroyed. Take it from me, haryana (sic) will give a befitting reply in the next polls and this man will be an unknown bottom feeder for the remainder of his life”

Ravinder Singh (@RaviSinghKA) of Khalsa reacted to Vij thus: “When an indian government minister calls for murder …. This rings so many bells from 1930s Nazi Germany ! What’s @Twitter doing about it !”

A Twitter user @rajnish1Midas having 1,608 followers commented, “KINDLY WITHDRAW THIS TWEET. its not in in line with your responsibility & protector of civil rights of all citizens as a minister who has taken oath to protect the constitution of India. Law shall take it’s own course. What you say here doesn’t make sense. Rest your choice.”

Following the tweet from the Haryana minister, Twitter notified him while he shared the notice from the microblogging platform on their very platform. Curiously, the site said subsequently the tweet by Vij violated none of the rules that govern Twitter.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Anil Vij said from his house in Ambala over the phone, “I do not say that objecting to government’s policies is a crime. It is democracy and anybody can object to any issue. But conspiring with foreign powers to raise an objection comes under the category of anti-national.”

“If we do not stop this and take action immediately, it will spread like a contagious disease. It is not in the interest of the nation,” the Haryana minister said.

“Therefore, the strictest action should be taken against such people. Those people who are supporting such people should be identified by the nation. Whether it is Priyanka Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi or Kejriwal. As they are provoking people for treason. Their motive should be identified and they should be strongly condemned and disdained in the country,” Vij explained.
