Trump makes it clear to WHO he wasn’t mouthing empty threats

While the US Congress has authorised $ 122 million for the WHO for this fiscal, the US president wants to spare no more than $ 58 million

As Sirf News had assessed the situation yesterday — where we said the US was seriously urging the World Health Organisation (WHO) by speaking the language of money — President Donald Trump has now said his government is considering a curb in the American funding of the -affiliated health agency. “So we’re going to do a study, an investigation, and we’re going to make a determination as to what we’re doing. In the meantime, we’re holding back,” Trump said at a White House press conference today (9 April).

To make it even clearer, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the administration was re-evaluating the funding to WHO. He added that the United Nation’s health organisation hadn’t “achieved what it intended to do,” particularly in response to the coronavirus pandemic (COVID).

“Organisations have to work. They have to deliver the outcomes for which they were intended,” Pompeo said. “We need to make sure that, not only the WHO but every international organisation that we take taxpayer money and give it to them (sic) for the benefit of America, we need to make sure it’s delivering on those taxpayer dollars.”

The US president had indicated he was thinking of withholding funds to the WHO for the first time yesterday. He had said the international agency had objected to his travel ban from China early during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Meanwhile, the US Congress has authorised $ 122 million for the WHO for this fiscal year. Trump wants $ 58 million in funding for the agency in fiscal 2021, but Congress is unlikely to approve of this drastic cut in the sponsorship.

Trump was today categorical, however, in his speech. He said his government was going ahead with his proposal of a huge reduction in the US grant to the WHO. He said today China contributed “a small fraction” of the amount of funding the US supports the WHO with every year. “And I think they have to get their priorities right, and their priorities are that every country has to be treated properly. Every country. And it doesn’t seem that way, does it?” he said.

While Pompeo sounded reserved on the issue of Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus’s resignation, unlike so many other Republicans, Trump did not miss the opportunity to slam the WHO director-general.

Without unity, more and more developed countries will face “more trouble and more crisis,” the WHO chief had said yesterday. “No need to use COVID to score political points. No need. You have many other ways to prove yourselves.” This was a message to the US politicians and lawmakers baying for his blood.

Not a person who would be bogged down, Trump responded thus: “I can’t believe he’s talking about politics when… look at the relationship they have to China. So China spends $ 42 million and we spend $450 million and everything seems to be China’s way.”

US President Trump has been blaming China for the COVID pandemic for a long time. He has referred to the biological agent as the “Chinese virus” on multiple occasions. Trump alleges that the WHO concealed China’s mistake, the brunt of which now the entire world bears.
