Triple talaq victims in UP to get Rs 6K annual pension

In September, UP CM Yogi Adityanath had announced that the beneficiaries would be Muslim as well as Hindu women abandoned by husbands

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced that talaq-e-biddat (triple talaq) victims will be given a pension of Rs 6,000 annually. These women will get Rs 500 per month as pension. The scheme will start in the new financial year.

According to government statistics, about 10,000 women living in Uttar Pradesh will benefit in the first three months. This amount will be given to women divorced by triple talaq and Hindu women abandoned by husbands. The government has prepared the complete proposal of this scheme. It will be brought up as an issue in the next state cabinet meeting.

Currently, a list of 5,000 women divorced by triple talaq and abandoned Hindu women is ready with the state government. They will be given the first instalment of the amount by the end of March.

In September, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced that an amount of Rs 6,000 per annum will be given to triple talaq victims as well as other women abandoned by husbands, regardless of their religion. During that time, in a conversation with women suffering from three divorces, the Chief Minister said that the government will advocate for three divorce victims free of cost.

The Uttar Pradesh chief minister had said that the children of the victimised women would get education for free according to the eligibility. Yogi had said they would be given the benefit of all schemes of the central and state governments.

A plan will also be made to provide a grant of Rs 6,000 annually for the rehabilitation of the victimised women. Educated women will get jobs that they qualify for. Women who have been suddenly divorced by triple talaq will get benefits of insurance schemes too.

The parliament banned triple talaq, which used to be allowed by Shari’ah in India but not in many Muslim countries, on 30 July. If a Muslim man leaves his wife through talaq-e-biddat, he is supposed to be jailed and he is also supposed to pay a hefty fine by the law. However, several cases of the illegalised practice have been reported from different parts of the country since then. The Uttar Pradesh government has taken this step keeping this in mind.
