The Kashmir Files declared tax-free in 4 BJP-ruled states

Sources in the party said the leadership would try to get The Kashmir Files declared tax-free in other states where the BJP is in power or in government through alliances

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday (13 March) announced that the recently-released film The Kashmir Files will be tax-free in the state. Amid receiving rave reviews, the film has been declared tax-free in Gujarat as well. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan yesterday declared the film tax-free in his too, stating that the film needed to be watched by maximum people. It is tax-free also in Haryana. With this, four BJP-ruled states are showing The Kashmir Files tax-free. Sources in the party said the rest of the states where it rules would follow suit soon.

The Mithun Chakraborty and Anupam Kher-starrer — boasting of thorough research based on more than 700 h of recording of statements from the victims of Islamic cleansing in Kashmir — was released last Friday and since then it has been enjoying an upward trend at the box office. Directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, the film has managed to impress the audience with its powerful content.

Recently, the National -winning director, his actor-producer wife Pallavi Joshi and producer Abhishek Agarwal met Prime Minister on Saturday. Sharing a picture with the PM, Abhishek wrote, “It was a pleasure to meet our Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri. Ji. What makes it more special is his appreciation and noble words about #TheKashmirFiles. We’ve never been prouder to produce a film. Thank you Modi Ji @narendramodi @vivekagnihotri #ModiBlessedTKF.” Vivek retweeted him and wrote, “I am so glad for you @AbhishekOfficl you have shown the courage to produce the most challenging truth of Bharat. #TheKashmirFiles screenings in USA proved the changing mood of the world in the leadership of @narendramodi.”

The film also stars Darshan Kumaar. On its first day, The Kashmir Files collected Rs 3.25 crore and it jumped to Rs 8.25 crore on the second day. The film is giving a tough competition to Prabhas starrer Radhe Shyam that released on the same day.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Chouhan said that the film was a heart-wrenching narration of the pain, suffering, struggle, and trauma faced by Kashmiri Hindus in the 1990s. “Movie #TheKashmirFiles is heart-wrenching narration of the pain, suffering, struggle, and trauma faced by Kashmiri Hindus in the 90s. This needs to be watched by maximum people, hence we have decided to make it a tax-free in the of Madhya Pradesh,” the chief minister said in a tweet.

Several filmmakers and the audience have lauded The Kashmir Files for its bold yet sensitive depiction of the plight of Kashmiri pundits during the 1990 period. Akshay Kumar was one of the first A-listed Bollywood actors to hail The Kashmir Files. On Twitter, he wrote that he wishes to see the film soon.

Akshay Kumar took to Twitter to laud Anupam Kher’s performance and the film. He reposted one of Anupam Kher’s latest tweets which had a behind-the-scenes (BTS) photo of the latter. Akshay’s tweet could be read, “Hearing absolutely incredible things about your performance in #TheKashmirFiles @AnupamPKher Amazing to see the audience back to the cinemas in large numbers. Hope to watch the film soon. Jai Ambe (sic).”
