An encounter broke out between terrorists and security personnel on 12 August after the ultras opened fired at a Border Security Force (BSF) convoy in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district, officials said.
The convoy was headed for Srinagar from Jammu when it was attacked, they said.
“Terrorists opened fire at a BSF convoy on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway at Malpora in the Qazigund area of Kulgam district,” an official said.
A police spokesperson said there were no reports of any injuries in the attack but the assailants were trapped.
“Terrorists fired upon BSF convey at NHW #Kulgam. No injury reported. However, terrorists trapped,” the Kashmir zone police quoted IGP, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar as saying.
The terrorists who had fired upon the BSF convoy at 2:30 PM in Malpora are now trapped. The encounter is happening near Mir Bazaar, Qazigund of Kulgam.
The spokesperson said reinforcements have reached the spot and senior officers of the police, CRPF and the Army were present there.
Inspector general of police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, said exchange of fire was underway and reinforcements have reached the spot. “Senior officers of police, CRPF and Army are present at the spot,” Kumar said.
The incident came close on the heels of several terror attacks ahead of Independence Day. On 10 August, terrorists lobbed a grenade at security forces at Hari Singh High Street in Srinagar injuring at least 10 civilians.
A day ago, a BJP leader and his wife were shot dead in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district. BJP’s Kisan Morcha president of Kulgam, Gulam Rasool Dar, and his wife passed away after terrorists fired bullets at the couple in the Lal Chowk area of Anantnag.
Last Saturday (7 August), a police personnel was killed in Kulgam district after terrorists opened fire at a police party. On 5 August, a grenade blast took place in the Nawhatta area of old city.
On 3 August, a police personnel and a civilian were injured after suspected militants opened fire on a police vehicle at Khanyar in Old City.
