Telangana home minister says fault lies with victim

Telangana Home Minister Mohammad Mahmood Ali said, '... It is unfortunate that the woman doctor called her sister instead of 100...'

The Telangana Home Minister has made a strange statement on the alleged rape, murder and gutting of a woman veterinary government doctor in Hyderabad, the capital of the State. Mohammad Mahmood Ali says that if the doctor had called the police in place of her sister, she could have been saved.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Home Minister Mohammad Mahmood Ali said, ‘We are saddened by this incident. Police are vigilant and controlling crime. It is unfortunate that the woman doctor called her sister instead of 100. If she had dialled 100, she could have been saved.

A charred body of the doctor was found on the Hyderabad-Bangalore highway this morning. It is believed that a 27-year-old woman doctor was killed after being raped. It is suspected that the accused burnt the doctor’s body under the flyover where the corpse was traced.

The woman doctor was returning home at night, during which her scooter got a flat tyre. Police suspect the assailants followed her, finding her alone that night. Police have arrested some suspects in this connection. Those arrested include Mohammed Pasha, the driver of the lorry.

The National Commission for Women has expressed its concern over the murder of the woman vet in Telangana. Commission president Rekha Sharma told the media that it seemed that “wolves are roaming freely on the streets, waiting to pounce on just one woman”.

Sharma demanded that the perpetrators of the crime be arrested, tried and sentenced to death. She said that a member of the commission would visit the victim’s family and offer them help in every manner possible. She said she would coordinate with the police to see that action is taken at the earliest.

People pleading for justice for Priyanka on social mediums mostly suspect this to be an instance of hate crime. Actor Payal Rohatgi’s tweet about the crime has garnered thousands of retweets so far.
