Tamil Nadu govt to seize Rs 475 crore worth Hindu property

A month ago, the Tamil Nadu HR&CE department had taken possession of a 32 ground prime property, worth Rs 160 crore; now, it's the Ekambareswarar temple

Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) minister PK Sekarbabu on Monday said that steps would be taken to retrieve the entire encroached land belonging to the Ekambareswarar temple in Kanchipuram on Poonamallee High Road at Kilpauk.

The minister said that the entire 140 grounds of land owned by the temple on the arterial road would be put for public use after it is taken over by the HR&CE department.

The ruling DMK has been at loggerheads with Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, who has been at the forefront of a movement to free Hindu places of worship from government control, before coming to power in Nadu.

While 45 grounds belonging to the temple has already been retrieved, the remaining 95 grounds of the land parcel is still under encroachment. The combined value of the 95 grounds property is estimated to be Rs 475 crores.

A month ago, the Nadu HR&CE department had taken possession of a 32 ground prime property, worth Rs 160 crore in value, on Poonamallee High Road at Kilpauk. The retrieved property is part of the 140 ground land parcel of Ekambareswarar Temple at Kancheepuram, where the HR&CE is running a matriculation school.

Yesterday, 1,970 sq ft of commercial space that was operating on the (Ekambareswarar) temple’s property was retrieved and razed down. HR and CE sources said that space was used for running four shops. The development comes following directions by the Court to return the 1,970 sq ft land to the HR&CE, according to a press release.

Briefing reporters on the occasion, the Nadu minister said the department had already retrieved about Rs 600 crore worth of temple property encroached upon(across the state). It will increase to Rs 1,000 crore soon, he said, adding that all the land belonging to the HR and CE under encroachment would be retrieved and returned to the respective temples.

Appealing to encroachers to voluntarily return the encroached temple land, Sekarbabu said that action is being initiated on complaints regarding encroached temple land online and directly.

HR&CE Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran and Joint Commissioner of Kancheepuram region Jayaraman were present on the occasion, the press release added.
