Taliban cancels 9/11 oath ceremony to ‘save money’

In any case, most governments that the Taliban regime had invited had shown no interest in attending the event notoriously scheduled for 9/11

The Taliban regime has cancelled the -taking ceremony of their interim cabinet of the so-called government of Afghanistan, which was scheduled to take place today (on 11 September), on the 20th of the 9/11 attack, say some reports. The Taliban is likely to have made this decision to save money at a time the country is reeling under a cash crunch. Some other reports have said, however, some allies pressured the Taliban against organising an -taking ceremony.

The Taliban leadership had, of course, never confirmed that they were planning to hold the ceremony on 11 September. But reports until today said repeatedly that the Taliban honchos had rolled out invitations to China, Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Qatar, Russia, India and the US.

The Kremlin confirmed yesterday that Russia would not take part in any way in the Taliban government’s inauguration ceremony in Afghanistan. The of Russia’s upper house of parliament had said earlier this week that some ambassador-level officials would represent Russia at the inauguration, the RIA news agency had reported.

A member of the Afghanistan government’s cultural commission, Inamullah Samangani on Twitter said, “The inauguration ceremony of the new Afghan government was cancelled a few days ago. In order not to confuse people further, the leadership of the Islamic Emirate announced the part of the Cabinet, and it has already started to work.”

After delaying the announcement over a reported disagreement between the Taliban and the Haqqani network, an interim cabinet was announced on Tuesday under the leadership of Taliban supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada.

Mullah Hasan, the chief of the Taliban’s powerful decision-making body ‘Rehbari Shura’, is now the acting prime minister while Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar is his deputy in the new Islamic government.

While the insurgent group which has returned to power in Afghanistan after two decades is making attempts to portray a more moderate image than during their rule 20 years ago, the claims have been questioned after the announcement of key figures in the caretaker government.
