Amethi: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Union minister Smriti Irani visited Amethi’s Barolia village on Saturday to meet family members of BJP worker Surendra Singh, who was killed recently.
Former Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had adopted Barolia in 2015 as a Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh.
“We are saddened at the death of Singh. He was a devoted party worker and the party stands with his family,” Sawant told reporters after meeting the family.
“Manohar Parrikar had adopted this village. If Uttar Pradesh government wants, we will work on education, health, roads, water and other problems in this village in his (Parrikar’s) memory,” the Goa Chief Minister said.
Sawant was accompanied by Irani, who is on her first planned visit to her constituency after defeating Congress President Rahul Gandhi.
The murder of Surendra Singh
Former village head Surendra Singh was killed on 25 May. Singh, who had been a part of the BJP local unit since 1997, had returned home quite late (around 11:30 PM) from a wedding ceremony that night. His family members heard gunshots and rushed out to find Singhís body lying in a pool of blood. He had been shot at point-blank as well as from a close range.
The family and some villagers then took Singh to a health centre nearby from where he was taken to Lucknow. He breathed his last on the way.
Several Hindi newspapers described the murder as a result of rajnaitik ranjish (political animus), stopping short of attributing it to any provocative statement. This, even as Singh ís son Abhay Pratap had expressed his suspicion right on the day after the murder, saying that some supporters of the Congress were behind the crime.
The preliminary findings in the inquiry by Uttar Pradesh Police suggested that the BJP event of distributing shoes in the constituency, which Congress general-secretary Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra had dubbed as an act to insult Rahul Gandhi, led to the murder of Singh.
The main accused in the case is a certain Waseem who was arrested the last among all the five suspects. The other four accused in the case are local Congress leader Ramchandra, Dharmanath, Naseem and Golu.
