Spielberg to helm film adaptation of DC Comics’ Blackhawk

The Ready Player One director, along with his Amblin Entertainment, will produce the film for Warner Bros, and may also direct it, the studio has announced

Los Angeles: With a variety of genres under his belt, Steven Spielberg will now be taking on a comic book movie next.

The Academy Award-winning filmmaker is set to develop Blackhawk, a DC Comics character who leads a small team of World War II ace pilots simply called the Blackhawks.

Blackhawk will be Spielberg’s first attempt in bringing the comic book genre to life after experimenting with 2011’s The Adventures Of Tintin which was a 3D computer animated movie filmed solely using motion capture.

The action-adventure film is based on the 1941 comic of the same name and centres on a team of World War II fighter pilots who are led by a mysterious man known as Blackhawk and face down fantastical threats.

The Ready Player One director, along with his Amblin Entertainment, will produce the film for Warner Bros, and may also direct it, the studio has announced.

Speilberg’s frequent collaborator, David Koepp, will be penning the script of the film. They have earlier worked on films such as Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

He will produce the film with Kristie Macosko Krieger under the Amblin Entertainment banner, while Sue Kroll will executive produce via her Kroll & Co Entertainment shingle.

“It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring Ready Player One to the screen. They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre. I am excited to reunite with them on Blackhawk,” Spielberg said.

Spielberg is currently preparing for the fifth Indiana Jones movie, which will be his next project. He is also tackling the remake of West Side Story.

Steven Allan Spielberg is considered one of the founding pioneers of the New Hollywood era and one of the most popular directors and producers in film history. He is also one of the co-founders of DreamWorks Studios.

In a career spanning more than four decades, Spielberg’s films have encompassed many themes and genres. Spielberg’s early science fiction and adventure films, such as Jaws (1975), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), were seen as archetypes of modern Hollywood escapist filmmaking. In later years, his films began addressing numerous humanistic issues such as the Holocaust, the transatlantic slave trade, civil rights, war, and terrorism in such films as The Color Purple (1985), Empire of the Sun (1987), Schindler’s List (1993), Amistad (1997), Saving Private Ryan (1998), Munich (2005), War Horse (2011), Lincoln (2012), Bridge of Spies (2015), and The Post (2017). His other films include Jurassic Park (1993), A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), and War of the Worlds (2005).
