Following the Congress Working Committee’s (CWC) observation that the dynasty was no way to blame for the terrible result of five state elections, INC interim president Sonia Gandhi today asked the party’s state unit chiefs of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur to put in their papers to facilitate the reorganisation of the Pradesh Congress Committees.
INC spokesperson Randeep Surjewala shared the information on social media platforms.
This means that Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, Uttarakhand Congress head Ganesh Godiyal, Goa Congress chief Girish Chodankar, Manipur Congress chief Loken Singh and Uttar Pradesh Congress head Ajay Kumar Lallu have to resign.
The remnant or vestige of the 1885-established party that has been clearly dynastic since the 1970s when Congress (Indira) had come into being, throwing out veterans of the party who former Congress (R) and Congress (O) has very little to show performance-wise in the recently concluded assembly elections in the five states. Besides a poor show in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur, it lost Punjab, one of the last three remaining states where it was in power.
Soon after, Uttarakhand Congress president Ganesh Godiyal resigned from the post. Taking to Twitter where he posted his resignation letter, Godiyal wrote, “Taking moral responsibility for the party’s defeat in the State Assembly elections, I have submitted my resignation today.”
The move comes two days after the CWC held a meeting that continued for over four hours and urged Sonia Gandhi to continue to lead and initiate changes required to strengthen the party.
The CWC also rejected her offer or theatrics to make any and every ‘sacrifice’ for the party, which was construed by some as an offer of the family of Sonia Gandhi to step aside and reposed faith in her leadership.
“We will fight on. We will overcome. We will continue to raise your voice,” the party said.
