Amethi: The BJP activist in charge of Smriti Irani’s Lok Sabha election campaign in Amethi and former pradhan of Baraulia village Surendra Singh was beaten to death by gangsters and gunmen on Saturday night. Prima facie, electoral rivalry is the reason behind the murder.

The former pradhan’s son Abhay Pratap Singh said that his father was close to BJP candidate and Union minister Smriti Irani and was responsible for her campaign in the Lok Sabha election from the Amethi constituency. After Irani’s win, a victory march was conducted in the village. “I think some Congress supporters did not like it. Perhaps that’s why he was murdered,” the son said.

After the murder, a heavy police force was deployed in the village. After raiding several houses, the police have arrested many suspects.

The villagers took Singh to the public health centre in the village in an injured state. Looking at his condition, the doctors referred him to Lucknow. Surendra succumbed to his bullet injuries on the way to Lucknow.

Surendra wielded a lot of influence in the area, which benefited Smriti Irani. People close to the family say that his stature in the village grew following Irani’s victory in the Lok Sabha election, which activists of the Congress and rivals in the local panchayat did not like.
