New Delhi: Olympic and world championship medallist PV Sindhu today suffered an injury scare, but there is no immediate threat to her participation in the starting next month.

The 22-year- Indian suffered a sprain in her right ankle while practising at the Gopichand Academy in under the watchful eyes of India chief coach Gopichand and assistant coach Mohd. Siyadutallah.

“She had hurt her ankle while training at the academy today. So we did an MRI to be 100% sure that everything is fine. No bone or ligament injury was found, so I am happy. we didn’t want to take any risk,” Sindhu’s PV Ramana said.

“Now she will rest for a day and day after tomorrow she will start running again. She will go to the ground tomorrow and do some strengthening experience. There is enough time as CWG starts with a team event. So nothing to worry,” the said.

Gopichand was a relieved man too. “She will be in good shape for the Commonwealth Games,” he said.

World No 3 Sindhu is a favourite to win the gold medal. She had won a bronze in the last edition at 2014 Glasgow CWG. She was the first Indian to reach an Olympic final in badminton.

Sindhu had won the in women’s singles at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Saina Nehwal had, before Sindhu’s feat, won a bronze at the London Olympics.

While Saina Nehwal had won the CWG gold in 2010, Sindhu won bronze in the last edition at Glasgow in 2014. “We are leaving on 1 April and I want to do well and win the event this time,” Sindhu said.

Sindhu has performed remarkably in the past two years. There is absolutely no question of her non-participation in the CWG despite the injury scare.

Sindhu is keen to win a gold at the CWG.
