Sidhu spreading misinformation, says Punjab advocate general

Deol slammed Sidhu for repeated utterances in a bid to derail the state's efforts to ensure justice in the drugs matter and sacrilege cases

Punjab Advocate General APS Deol, who resigned from his earlier this week, blasted INC leader Navjot Singh Sidhu today, saying that the former cricketer was spreading misinformation to gain political advantage.”Sidhu’s repeated utterances seek to derail the efforts of the Punjab government to ensure in the drugs matter and the sacrilege cases,” Deol said in a statement.

Sidhu had opposed the appointment of Advocate General APS Deol and Director General of Police Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota and indicated that these two appointments were part of the reason he quit.

Deol slammed the cricketer-turned-politician for “repeated utterances (that) seek to derail the earnest efforts of the to ensure in the ‘drugs matter’ and the ‘sacrilege cases'”.

“Navjot Singh Sidhu is obstructing the functioning of the government and the office of AG,” Deol said.

“There is a concerted attempt by vested interests to malign the functioning of the Congress in view of upcoming elections in Punjab for their selfish political gain by politicising the constitutional office of the Advocate General of Punjab,” he said.

Deol had represented former DGP Sumedh Singh Saini, who headed the police six years ago during the incidents of sacrilege and police on protesters.

Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu yesterday said he had withdrawn his resignation as the party’s Punjab chief but declared that he will not re-assume charge till the state’s new advocate general is removed.

Even while announcing that he is taking back his resignation as Punjab Pradesh Congress president, Sidhu continued to target the new Charanjit Singh Channi-led Congress government in the state.

Sidhu said all he was asking was what the Channi government has done in the past 50 days on the sacrilege case and on making a special task force report on drug cases public.
