Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) and now Rajya Sabha MP Justice Ranjan Gogoi made a sensational accusation against Indian National Congress (INC) politician Kapil Sibal today, saying the senior advocate had approached him in 2018 to seek support for the impeachment of then CJI Deepak Misra. According to Justice (retd) Gogoi, he did not allow Sibal to enter his house.
Gogoi made this claim in an interview on television news channel Times Now. He said, “Kapil Sibal, as an individual, I would not like to comment. But I don’t know whether I did the right thing or the wrong and whether I am facing the consequences because of that. But after the press conference (of the then four judges of the Supreme Court on 12 January 2018), he had come to my residence to seek the Supreme Court support for the impeachment motion against (the then CJI) Dipak Mishra. I refused his entry into the house… Then I was third in the seniority order (of Supreme Court judges).
It may be recalled that the efforts of the INC, communist parties and other opposition parties to get then CJI Misra impeached continued for a few months until the next session of the parliament in the middle of 2018.
The opposition’s efforts failed eventually.
When Gogoi was asked how he would know what Sibal had come to say when if he did not allow him to enter the house, the former CJI said, “Because there was a call in the evening and I was told that he (Sibal) would come here to talk to me on this issue. I told the caller not to allow him to come to my house.”
Justice Gogoi pointed out that the benefits that a Rajya Sabha MP gets against attending the parliament for 60 days a year were four stages beneath the perks of a CJI. On being told that the membership of the Rajya Sabha was a gift from the government, said that such an idea could only be of an enemy of the country.
The anchor then read out to Gogoi a statement of Sibal against his nomination to the upper house. The anchor asked Gogoi, “Would you call Kapil Sibal an enemy of the country?”
Saying he would not like to comment on the person of Sibal and then revealed to the channel the advocate’s bid to seek an appointment with him after the press conference on 12 January 2018.
