Shramik Special trains ferried 42 lakh migrants since 1 May

The Indian Railways had on 1 May launched the Shramik Special trains to facilitate the movement of migrant workers back to their home states

The Indian Railways has, through its 3,276 Shramik Special trains, ferried around 42 lakh migrant workers since 1 May. The official data released today says of the total trains, the services of 2,875 have been terminated while 401 are on the run.

The top five states and union territories from where maximum trains originated are Gujarat (897), Maharashtra (590), Punjab (358), Uttar Pradesh (232), Delhi (200).

The top five states where maximum trains terminated are Uttar Pradesh (1,428), Bihar (1,178), Jharkhand (164), Odisha (128) and Madhya Pradesh (120).

The Railways is operating these Shramik Special trains primarily on the requests of the states. While the central department is bearing 85% of the total cost of running each train, the states fund the rest of the fares.

The -triggered lockdown has had a devastating impact on the and the livelihoods of lakhs of migrant workers. The plight of migrant workers walking on foot from cities to small towns and villages hundreds of miles away grabbed international headlines for nearly two months, denting the image of India.

Some of the migrants met with accidents on the way. A speeding goods train killed everybody in a group after they mysteriously fell asleep on the tracks.

governments came across as shady too. A Shramik Special train ferrying migrant workers from Delhi and Gurugram to Dimapur met with rowdies on the way in Bihar and Bengal where policemen tried to push unscreened people into the coaches.

The Indian Railways said that the rail route congestion, witnessed on 23 and 24 May, is now over. “The congestion had occurred due to convergence of more than two-third rail traffic on routes to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and late clearance of terminals due to health protocols etc. that needed to be completed by authorities,” it said, adding, “The matter has been resolved through active consultation with state governments and also finding other feasible routes for the journey.”

On 1 May, the Indian Railways started the Shramik Special trains to facilitate the of migrant workers back to their home states. While on the first day, it operated four such trains, it increased the number to 279 on 20 May.

In the last four days, the Railways has operated 260 trains on an average daily carrying about three lakh passengers.
