Kolkata: Syed Mohammad Nurur Rahman Barkati of the All India Minority Forum has issued a fatwa that whoever shaves Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s head and smear him in ink will get a cash reward of Rs 25 lakhs.
Since demonetisation, although the Prime Minister has faced sharp criticism and attacks from West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, what transpired during the press conference on Saturday by the Shahi Imam of the Tipu Sultan mosque was unprecedented. He was speaking in support of Banerjee.
A fatwa is an Islamic diktat issued by an authoritative religious head like a mufti.
The imam justified his fatwa saying that this is a punishment for the ‘sin’ Modi committed by demonetisation.
Idris Ali, TMC MP from the Barasat constituency who was present along with the imam during the press conference at the Calcutta Press Club, expressed his strong approval of the fatwa by thumping his hands on the desk.
Imam Barkati is known to be close to Banerjee. He also added that the people of India want Modi to be replaced by Mamata Banerjee as the Prime Minister.
Reacting to the development, BJP’s Shamik Bhattacharya said, “It’s beneath my taste to react to this man. It is natural of a party like the TMC to laud such belligerence; so, I am not surprised that their MP and ministers clapped as this maulana issued the fatwa. If they had done otherwise, I would have been surprised.”
The imam had also said during the event that Modi had harmed the people with demonetisation. This is a sin, he said. He went on to say that the Prime Minister should be tonsured as well as shaved clean, which would fetch the perpetrator Rs 25 lakh.
The imam also said that the people wanted to see Mamata Banerjee as the next prime minister.
