New Delhi: BJP’s rebel MP Shatrughan Sinha is still in the process of joining the Congress. He was going to join the Congress on Thursday, but that has not happened yet. Reportedly, he is joining the Congress on 6 April.
Amid all speculations, however, Sinha met with Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday.
After this meeting, Shatrughan Sinha said, “Our meeting was very meaningful, he (Rahul Gandhi) encouraged me. My party persecuted me for years; I was a victim of their torture. Rahul appreciated and commended the way I faced it. Therefore, I express my gratitude.”
Sinha said the Congress president was the favourite leader of the country. “I am a big fan of the Nehru-Gandhi family. I consider them nation builders.”
About the BJP, the actor-turned-politician said, “I criticised the poor policies of the government, so I was harassed.”
Sinha said he would soon join the Congress. “The good news will arrive after Navaratri,” he said.
Patna Sahib for Shatrughan Sinha, come what may!
Before this meeting, Sinha had said he was going to meet Gandhi. “There is no delay from us, there is no disturbance,” he had said.
About the Patna Sahib seat, he said he had made the point many times earlier that, whatever the situation is, his seat would be the same.
Congress leader and controversial lawyer RK Anand had said early on Thursday Sinha could join the Congress after 2 PM. He had said there was no problem with the seat of Shatrughan Sinha. Getting a little late was not an issue, Anand said.
News mediums were abuzz with the rumour that Sinha was joining the Congress on 28 March. The BJP did not repeat his nomination for the Patna Sahib seat.
It is a matter of time before the Congress declares Shatrughan Sinha its candidate from Patna Sahib. Sinha had won this constituency on a BJP ticket for two consecutive terms. Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has been given the BJP ticket from Patna Sahib for the 2019 Lok Sabha election.
Shatrughan Sinha had begun his political career with a defeat in election when the BJP had pitted him against another actor-turned-politician Rajesh Khanna in New Delhi in the 1992 by-election. A year before that, however, Congress’s Khanna had lost the election to BJP’s LK Advani.
Question on conduct
While the Congress is not strong in Patna Sahib, Sinha’s nomination could subject him to questions about his public conduct again as he had been criticised for appearing in the advertisements of a liquor brand in the 1990s.
In a video of his public appearance on 27 March, which went viral, he looked and sounded as though he was drunk.
