After a video of a seditious speech by former JNU student, ultra-communist activist and Shaheen Bagh Coordination Committee chief Sharjeel Imam delivered in Aligarh went viral, an FIR has been registered against him in Assam and Uttar Pradesh. Aligarh SSP Akash Kulhari said Sharjeel had been charged under Sections 124A, 153A, 153B and 505 (2) of the IPC and that the provocateur will soon be arrested.
Assam ADGP (Law and Order) GP Singh said that an FIR has been registered against Sharjeel. Assam Finance Minister and BJP leader Hemant Biswa Sarma said that Assam Police had registered a case against Shaheen Bagh protests’ chief organiser Sharjeel Imam. He said the state government had taken cognisance of this seditious statement and has decided to register a case.
Aligarh Police said that a case of sedition had been registered in Aligarh Muslim University against the inflammatory speech Sharjeel delivered on 16 January. A Hindu organisation lodged a complaint at the Aligarh Civil Sign Police Station to file a case. Aligarh police registered the case on Saturday.
The video surfaced amidst the ongoing protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra shared it and asked, “If this is not anti-national, then what is?” Patra wrote, “Friends, look at the reality of Shaheen Bagh. (Sharjeel Imam says)
- It is our duty to separate Assam from India
- Chicken Neck belongs to Muslims
- Obstruct the Indian Army’s way to Assam
- All non-Muslims must accept the terms of Muslims”
Soon after Patra shared the video on Twitter, he held a press conference and released the video there too. The BJP spokesman said that the kind of things happening in Shaheen Bagh should be called not Shaheen but Dishaheen (directionless) Bagh. He alleged that Sharjeel saw the freedom of India as unholy. The spokesman said elements such as Sharjeel Imam were hatching a conspiracy in places like Shaheen Bagh to end the independence of India.
The Islamic activist had said another thing in his speech that Patra did not mention. He said communists like Kanhaiya Kumar were interested only in photo-ops. “Kanhaiya Kumar would go to Assam, raise the slogan ‘Inquilab Zindabad’, and return after getting himself photographed. We Muslims will get nothing from the Congress and even the left.”
