So far no activist from Shaheen Bagh has contacted Amit Shah regarding their intended meeting with the union home minister, officials in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) have said. The ministry said no activist had sought communicated to them that they wanted to meet Shah at 2 PM on Sunday.
Demonstrations continue in Shaheen Bagh against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The protesting women had told reporters on Saturday, as reported by Sirf News earlier today, that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had invited the entire country to discuss issues related to the CAA, due to which they were going to meet him at MHA at 2 PM on Sunday.
Some of the women demonstrating at Shaheen Bagh said they would take no delegation to the MHA. People who have problems with CAA may come along, they said.
Shah had recently said in a TV channel programme that if anyone had any doubts about the CAA, he/she could fix an appointment with his office (MHA) and meet him. He will answer all questions related to CAA, he had said on Times Now.
The issue of Shaheen Bagh had overshadowed the Delhi assembly election. Muslims of the area supported by leftists from different parts of the capital city and the country protested to the chagrin of daily commuters of the route for almost two months. People hoped that after the election, those squatting on the road would disperse, but that has not happened yet.
The matter is sub judice in the Supreme Court. The court will hear the case on 17 February. DCP South Eastern said that the police are trying to clear the road for vehicular traffic by talking to the squatting demonstrators.
The road from Noida to Sarita Vihar (on both sides) has remained closed for nearly two months. The police proposed to move these people away and offer them another place to protest but the demonstrators did not accept the offer.
