Shah: Govt won’t bend, no matter how much they protest

Our government will give citizenship to minority refugees from outside, whatever politics the opposition may resort to, said the Union home minister

Amid protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, Home Minister Amit Shah has given a statement. During a programme in Delhi, he said, “Our government will definitely give citizenship to minority refugees from outside, whatever politics the opposition may take recourse to. BJP and Modi government are determined.”

Shah said that legitimate refugees as per the amended law will certainly get citizenship. “They will become citizens of India and live in the world with respect,” the home minister said.

Shah said, reiterating his statement in Parliament, that the opposition was misleading the people of the country. “I repeat that there is no question of taking away the citizenship of any person from any minority community. There is no such provision in the Bill.”

Taking a dig at the INC, Amit Shah said that I want to tell the Congress party that this was part of the Nehru-Liaquat agreement, but did not apply for 70 years, because you wanted to create a vote bank. Our government has implemented the treaty and has given citizenship to millions of people.

While Amit Shah renewed his pledge to the amended citizenship law, the leader of the opposition party met President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday to withdraw it. After meeting the president, Sonia Gandhi said that the situation in the Northeast and Delhi was tense. “We have asked the president to intervene in the matter,” she said.

The interim president of the INC said that the police entered the hostels of the girls at Jamia Millia University. “It is a democratic right to demonstrate,” she said, adding that the Narendra Modi government was “suppressing the voice of the people”.

TMC MP Derek O’Brien said, “We have requested the President to advise the government to immediately withdraw the revised citizenship law.”

Congress MP Ghulam Nabi Azad called the law “divisive”. “The government is not worried about the country and its citizens. The opposition knew that the country would reject this law. This is happening Demonstrations are taking place in institutions like IITs and IIMs. He said that five people died in Assam; 21 people were injured. First Kashmir, then Northeast and now the whole country,” he said.

In the meantime, violence spread in Muslim-dominated areas of Delhi, with rioters masquerading as protesters destroying public property and pelting stones at the police in Seelampur, Daryaganj and Jasola. yesterday and the day before, they had come out of the Jamia Nagar area to vandalise Sukhdev Vihar and New Friends Colony.

The intelligence agencies have warned Delhi Police that the ultimate targets of the rioters, aided by Islamist outfits SIMI and PFI, are Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. Accordingly, security has been tightened of the entire VVIP zone in central Delhi.
