The case of evacuating the road between Kalindi Kunj in Shaheen Bagh in Delhi has reached the Supreme Court amid demonstrations against the National Register of Citizens and the Citizenship Amendment Act by misleading leftists and misled Muslims continue unabated since 15 December 2019. Petitioner Amit Sahni has demanded an early hearing on the case from the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice (CJI) SA Bobde has asked the petitioner to go to the mentioning officer.

Shaheen jam by politicians

A large number of people have been squatting in protest against the CAA and NRC in the Shaheen Bagh area of south Delhi since 15 December. While the permanent faces of this protest are the local Muslims, politicians of the INC, communist parties, AAP and other opposition parties pay visits to the spot every now and then.

Seeing the opposition jam on the spot, the BJP is targeting these parties as it cannot say politically incorrect things about Muslims. The party has slammed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia for standing with the activists. It has dubbed the spot as “Shame Bagh”. The party’s Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy has asked for moving the venue of protest from the road to camps.

Commuters’ nightmare

Road 13A has been closed between Thura Road and Kalindi Kunj ever since the demonstrators blocked the thoroughfare. Those commuting between Delhi and Noida or from Noida to Delhi are forced to take long detours to reach their destinations. What should be a 15-minute drive is thus getting stretched to up to two hours.

On 21 January, some protesters met Lt Governor Anil Baijal and claimed that they had given passage to school buses so that schoolchildren were not bothered. Then they added that the protests would continue until the CAA is withdrawn.

Last week, Delhi Police had requested in a meeting with religious leaders and social workers of the Shaheen Bagh area to prevail upon the activists and persuade them to leave the public road. It proved an exercise in futility.
