The process for selecting India’s official entry to Oscars 2022 in the Best International Feature Film category has begun. Jury members in Kolkata are screening a total of 14 films to select a final one. Among the list of shortlisted films are Vidya Balan’s Sherni and Vicky Kaushal’s Sardar Udham. Both the films are currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Vidya Balan plays a forest officer trying to resolve man-animal conflicts in Sherni. Directed by Amit Masurkar, the film starred Sharat Saxena, Mukul Chaddha, Vijay Raaz, Ila Arun, Brijendra Kala and Neeraj Kabi in pivotal roles.
On the other hand, Vicky Kaushal’s Sardar Udham is the tale of a courageous revolutionary, Sardar Udham Singh, who was on a mission to avenge the lives of those who were brutally killed in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919. The film is directed by Shoojit Sircar.
Besides Sherni and Sardar Udham, Malayalam film Nayattu and Tamil film Mandela are in the nominations race.
The 94th Academy Awards will be held in March 2022 in the US. The process to select which film would represent India at the Oscars is happening at Bijoli cinema in Bhowanipore, Kolkata. A panel of 15 judges is going to watch 14 films over the next few days to shortlist India’s official entry to the Oscars 2022.
The screening of these 14 films is currently happening in Kolkata. The jury members will select one film, which will be nominated by India for the Best International Feature Film category.
Popular filmmaker Shaji N Karun is the chairman of the jury. The panel consists of 15 judges who will watch the 14 films over the next few weeks before shortlisting one to represent India at the Oscars 2022. The screening of the shortlisted films is taking place at Bikoli cinema in Bhowanipore, Kolkata.
