Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Uma Bharti has said that the Centre is committed to the revival of the ancient Saraswati river.
The minister was replying to a ‘calling attention’ motion in the Lok Sabha today on the need to set up a Saraswati Research Institute. The minister said there was enough scientific evidence on the presence of the Saraswati in some parts of the country through which it flowed about 5,000-6,000 years ago.
Bharti said her ministry was taking up the issue very seriously to trace the route of the river, which is now extinct. The minister said the government has the information collected from all relevant sources about river Sarswati. She also informed the house that the Central Ground Water Board of her ministry has been directed to test the water of a well located inside Allahabad fort in this connection.
