Sanjay Jha suspended from INC for ‘anti-party activities’

A former spokesman of the Indian National Congress (INC), Sanjay Jha, whom the party had removed from the post last month for a newspaper article, now stands suspended from the organisation. The Maharashtra unit of the INC, issuing a two-line note, said the party was suspending Jha with immediate effect for “anti-party activities and breach of discipline”.

The INC statement did not outline the charge against Sanjay Jha. It may well have a link with the bevvy of tweets and statements over the ongoing Ashok Gehlot versus Sachin Pilot tussle in Rajasthan.

Jha backed Pilot, whom the INC had removed as Rajasthan deputy chief minister and the party’s state unit president just hours earlier. The former INC spokesman had been tweeting in support of Pilot for the past few days. Jha credits him with rebuilding the party from 2014 when he was inducted as the head of the Rajasthan Congress.

In tweets and his statements to television channels, Jha was critical of how the Congress is being run and spoken of disillusionment within the party.

On 17 June, the INC had removed Jha as its spokesperson after he publicly criticised the party’s functioning while questioning the leadership in a newspaper article.

Jha had written an article in The Times of India on 7 June where he said it was a false claim that the INC had an internal platform for a frank exchange of ideas to get the party back on track.

Jha’s comments had once again brought the focus back on the leadership issue in the INC.

In the last week of June, Jha tweeted he was “throwing his hat in the ring” as a candidate for the Congress Working Committee — the highest decision-making body in the oldest yet most eroded party — “as and when there are elections”.

Jha had bulldozed his way into being a regular face on television during the era when the INC spokespersons used to be too embarrassed to face the camera to answer uncomfortable questions on a plethora of alleged scams. He tried to suffice as an unofficial spokesperson by posing as the owner of a pro-INC HamaraCongress[dot]com. The party, impressed by his performance, subsequently acceded to his urge to enter the organisation as a regular on the panel of spokespersons.
