The party’s official Twitter handle also carried a picture showing Poonam Sinha joining the party in the presence of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple Yadav, an MP from Kannauj.
Sinha is likely to be fielded from Lucknow seat against Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who is a BJP candidate, said party sources.
Singh filed his nomination from the Lucknow Lok Sabha seat on Tuesday.
Lucknow is going to polls on 6 May along with a total of 51 constituencies across seven states in the fifth phase of elections.
Not only had Shatrughan Sinha made his continuation in the BJP untenable with constant barbs aimed at the party leadership, his daughter Sonakshi Sinha, who is a Bollywood actor too, often takes political stands on issues. The stand is often seen in conflict with the core ideology of the RSS-BJP. To that extent, Poonam Sinha joining a rival party is not surprising.
However, in happier times in their old party, Poonam, a Sindhi by descent, is reported to have recommended Pahlaj Nihalani to the BJP-led NDA government for the post of chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), popularly referred to as the “censor board”.
Another source in the party said Nihalani was actually not recommended by Poonam Sinha. The source theorised that a Sindhi was made the head of the CBFC in order to placate Shatrughan Sinha who was increasingly turning unruly. “The party tried a rather tortuous route to the husband’s heart by catering to the wife’s community,” the BJP leader added, chuckling.
