Salman alias Haseen alias Mulla alias Nanhe was arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police on Thursday for killing IB security assistant Ankit Sharma during the riots in north-east Delhi. Delhi Police says that before killing Ankit, the rioters had stripped him to identify his religion and then stabbed him to death with knives.
Sharma died in five minutes but the rioters kept stabbing even the lifeless body. Earlier, the postmortem report had revealed that Sharma had been stabbed 400 odd times.
The rioters had captured two other Hindu youths along with Sharma. Both somehow managed to escape from their clutches. As Sharma was caught alone, he bore the brunt of the rioters’ brutality. They murdered him and dragged the body first and then tried to lift it atop a pole but then threw the body in a garbage-filled drain.
The attempt to lift the body atop the pole had failed. Then, some of the rioters together threw the body with a mesh of iron wire and threw it in the drain.
The Crime Branch had arrested Tahir Hussain, suspended councillor of the AAP, on 5 March. He is in seven-day police remand for interrogation until Friday. His interrogation with respect to the riot case will happen separately.
Three cases have been registered against Hussain, including that of the murder of Ankit Sharma. In all cases, the Crime Branch will take remand in turns.
After interrogating Hussain, the police have arrested his brother and two others among the rioters, including three accomplices who had harboured him: Liaquat, Riyasat and Tariq Rizvi.
Police have recovered his licensed pistol and sent it to the Forensic Science Laboratory for investigation.
A rioter named Gulfam has been identified in the riots that Hussain allegedly led. The Crime Branch and North-East District Police are searching for him.
Rioters had killed another Hindu that day
The AAP has still not expelled Hussain, their councillor from the Mustafabad constituency. Officials said that the central investigation agency has registered a criminal case against Hussain for killing the IB official. Hussain is currently in the custody of Delhi Police.
The Karkardooma court on Wednesday sent two people accused of rioting in the north-eastern district to 14-day judicial custody. Among them, Riyasat Ali is accused of inciting violence with Tahir Hussain while Shahnawaz killed Dilbar Negi.
Petrol bombs hurled from Hussain’s house
The police presented Riyasat and Shahnawaz in the court of Judge Richa Parihar. Police told the court that on 24-25 February, Riyasat Ali was in the Chand Bagh area on the roof of Hussain’s house. He threw stones and petrol bombs at the people on the ground from the roof.
Police told the court that Riyasat Ali also supported Hussain in the murder of IB official Sharma.
After hearing the arguments of the police, the court sent Riyasat and Shahnawaz to judicial custody for 14 days.
Earlier on Monday, Shahnawaz’s police remand was extended for two days. Police told the court that Shahnawaz had brutally murdered Dilbar Negi, who worked at a sweets shop on Brijpuri Road, during the riots.
