Delhi Police on 13 February said that the Rinku Sharma murder case had been transferred to the Crime Branch. In a shocking incident on 10 February, 25-year-old Rinku Sharma was stabbed to death by a group of men following a quarrel at a birthday party in Mangolapuri area of the national capital. “Mangolpuri murder case transferred to Crime Branch,” the police said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police arrested the fifth accused in the killing of Rinku Sharma, the department said on 11 February. Police said that the fifth accused had been identified as Tazuddin (29) who worked as a home guard earlier, news agency reported.

Tazuddin’s arrest follows that of four other men ― Zahid, Mehtab, Danish and Islam ― from the same community. They are all related to one another, police said.

The police said both Rinku and the accused men had an argument over their eatery business which had to be shut down after they started incurring losses. They, however, said that these facts were being verified.

Delhi Police confused over the antecedents of Rinku Sharma?

Police said that on 10 February night, when both the victim and the accused had been attending the birthday party, an argument broke out between them over their food joints in Rohini. They hit one another and then they left ― apparently with the dispute still unsettled.

Later, the four men went to Sharma’s house where the victim, along with his elder brother, was already standing outside with sticks. A scuffle broke out between the two sides again during which the accused stabbed Sharma and fled from the spot, a senior police officer said. The victim was then rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, the police said.

This police version is, however, disputed. Rinku Sharma’s mother Radha Devi says her son was brutally lynched by the very people he had donated his blood to ― twice a year ago.

It turns out, Rinku had donated blood to the wife of one of the murderers. The woman was pregnant in 2019 and was in a critical condition. On two occasions, Rinku Sharma donated her blood.

Furthermore, Delhi Police had earlier shared a version that it suppressed this time. They had said that they found that Rinku had helped Islam’s brother Shakur get admitted to a hospital when he tested Covid-19-positive.

Hindu organisations like Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) say that Rinku Sharma was killed due to his participation in the collection of donation for Ram temple construction in Ayodhya. “We urge the administration to arrest the culprits without delay and ensure the strictest punishment to them,” VHP joint general secretary Surendra Jain said.

Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta met the family of Sharma on 12 February to provide a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to them. He said the victim was associated with collecting contributions for the construction of Ram temple. However, the Delhi Police denied any communal angle to the murder and said the fight at a birthday party took place over a business rivalry.
