There was an uproar in the Lok Sabha on Friday on the statement of INC leader Rahul Gandhi. At a rally in Jharkhand yesterday, Rahul Gandhi had said that India has become the capital of rape and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative had given way to ‘Rape in India’. Today, many women MPs, including Union Minister Smriti Irani, demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi for the comment.
In the Lok Sabha on Friday, Smriti Irani said, “The Gandhi family member has said that women should be raped, not everyone in the country is a rapist. The law punishes the rapist. Not every woman can be tarnished, action should be taken on this.”
Irani said that the women of the country were not anybody’s property. She demanded action against the person who made the ‘rape in India’ remark.
Many other women MPs and Union ministers of BJP targeted Rahul Gandhi and demanded his apology.
Union minister Pralhad Joshi said, “When Rahul Gandhi openly says “rape in India”, is he inviting the world to come to India and rape?”
Slogans were raised against Rahul Gandhi in the Rajya Sabha, too, but Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said that a member who did not belong to the Upper House could not be a subject matter of debate in that House.
The obnoxious remark was made by Gandhi as he attacked the Modi government at the INC’s Mehrana rally in Jharkhand. Gandhi had said, “In the country, Narendra Modi had said ‘Make in India’. Now wherever you look, there is not ‘Make in India’ but ‘Rape in India’. When you open a newspaper, you see a woman in Jharkhand raped, Narendra Modi’s MLA rapes a woman in UP, etc. Every day, there are rapes in India.”
Before Gandhi, INC leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had made a similar statement in the Parliament. However, Chowdhury apologised after a ruckus over the statement.
