The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Tollywood actors and directors, including Rakul Preet Singh and Rana Daggubati in connection with a four-year-old drug case. The ED is probing a money laundering case in which Rakul Preet Singh has been asked to appear before the agency on 6 September, Rana Daggubati on 8 September and Ravi Teja on 9 September. Director Puri Jagannadh has been called in by the ED on 31 August. Mumaith Khan has been summoned to appear on 15 November.
Actress Charmme Kaur has been summoned by the financial probe agency.
Sources said that the celebrities have been summoned as witness in the case. The money laundering probe by the ED is based on a case by the excise and prohibition department. The Special Investigation Team of Hyderabad Excise And Prohibition Department in July 2017 launched an investigation against Tollywood celebrities and others.
The SIT had then collected hair and nail samples of 62 suspects including the celebrities, but so far, SIT has not filed chargesheet against any celebrity. SIT has not disclosed till date if any celebrity was part of drug trafficking or consumption.
A South African national, Rafael Alex Victor, was arrested by SIT in August 2017 for allegedly supplying cocaine from Mumbai to Hyderabad.
The Excise Department had constituted the SIT for a comprehensive probe. A total of 12 cases were registered, 30 people were arrested while 62 individuals including 11 people connected with Tollywood were examined by the SIT under Section 67 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and section 161 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The SIT had collected blood, hair, nail and other samples from some of those who appeared before it for questioning and sent them for analysis. Actors Ravi Teja, Charmme Kaur, Mumaith Khan, well-known director Puri Jagannadh and young actors Tarun Kumar and P Navadeep were among the prominent personalities who were questioned by the SIT. Cinematographer Shyam K Naidu, actors Subbaraju, Tanish, Nandu and Ravi Teja’s driver Srinivas were also among those questioned. The SIT filed a chargesheet in eight out of the 12 cases. It, however, gave clean chit to the film personalities who were questioned as part of the investigation. Additionally, due to the delay in filing the chargesheets, most of the main accused in the case, including Calvin, were released on bail.
