Rajinikanth starrer incurs huge losses to distributors

Kaala has been reportedly made with a huge budget of Rs 140 crore and its worldwide theatrical rights were sold for a whopping price of Rs 165 crore

Mumbai: Rajinikanth starrer Gangster drama Kaala, has completed its run and it has collected Rs 150.40 Cr gross at the worldwide box office in 45 days. The movie has earned Rs 75.10 Cr for its global distributors, who shelled out a price of Rs 165 Cr on its theatrical rights. Kaala has turned out disaster at the box office and incurred huge losses to its distributor.

According to the report, Kaala has  collected Rs 60.30 Cr gross in Tamil Nadu, Rs 37.5 Cr gross in other parts of India and Rs 52.6 Cr gross in the US, the UK, Malaysia and other international markets.

Kaala was released in a record number of cinema halls on 7 June and received a good response, but the mixed word of mouth affected its collection in the following weeks. The movie has been withdrawn from most of the theatres a week before it completed 50 days.

The Pa-Ranjith-directed movie has ended up becoming the fifth highest grossing movie of Rajinikanth, as it has failed to beat the lifetime collection records of his previous films like Shivaji (Rs 155 crore) and Lingaa (Rs 154 crore).

Kaala has beaten the records of Theri and Vedalam, to become the seventh highest grossing Tamil film of all time. Top 15 grossing Kollywood movies.
