A 28-year-old widow’s in-laws allegedly chopped off her nose and tongue in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer on 17 November after she rejected their proposal to remarry a relative.

Kanta Singh, a local police officer, said the cops had arrested the prime accused and were looking for the co-accused. The woman was widowed a year after she got married about six years ago. Her sister-in-law had since been trying to allegedly get her married off to the relative.

The woman’s brother said his sister had rejected the idea. He added his sister’s in-laws came to their home and attacked her. “They chopped off her nose and tongue and also broke her right hand. Our mother. who tried saving her daughter, was also injured in the attack.”

Son after the incident was reported in the media, the police chased the suspects and arrested the main accused. The search for the other accused is still on. Police referred the victim to Jodhpur for treatment, where her condition is said to be stable. Station House Officer Kanta Singh of Sakra Police Station confirmed the news.

According to the police, Basir Khan, a resident of Jagiro’s Dhani in Sakra block, lodged a complaint in this regard. Basir said that his sister Guddi was married to Koje Khan about six years ago. Basir further told the police that Koje Khan died after one year of marriage. After the death of Koje Khan, her sister Guddi’s in-laws started forcing her to marry someone else at her in-laws’ house but Guddi refused.

Basir alleged that some of the accused among Guddi’s in-laws reached her house on 17 November afternoon and attacked Guddi for her refusal to marry. Basir further said, “They cut Guddi’s nose and tongue and also broke her right hand. They hit mother Bismillah who had come to save the daughter was injured by the accused.”

SHO Kanta Singh said that after registering the case, they arrested the main accused Janu Khan while the search for the remaining accused is on. According to the police, the accused were identified as Janu Khan, Dulle Khan, Iqbal Khan, Hasam Khan, Sali, Farrukh Khan, Ambe Khan, Laddu Khan, Manu Khan, Anwar Khan, Salim Khan, Nemte Khan and Nebe Khan.
