In a disturbing incident in Maharashtra capital Mumbai, a fellow passenger sexually harassed a woman in a local train saving her from a chain snatcher. It turned out that the two assailants were members of one gang. The main suspect was identified as Rahim Sheikh.
The incident took place late on 24 November when the victim was going to meet her brother in Kandivali. The woman boarded the Churchgate bound train from her residence in Bhayander at 11:45 PM from Borivali station.
At the time, there was only one passenger in the train identified as 32-year-old Rahim Sheikh, according to a report in media.
According to police, moments later, another man identified as 32-year-old Omprakash Dikshit followed the woman inside the train. He held a knife to her throat and demanded to hand over her gold necklace and cellphone.
As the women cried for help, passenger Rahim Sheikh came to her rescue. Cops say Sheikh hit the thief in the head and forced him to flee the train.
The woman said Rahim Sheikh assured her that she was safe in the train and he was like her brother. However, as the train was about to leave the station, Sheikh called back Om Prakash inside the train, the woman wrote in her complaint to the police.
As the train moved between Borivali and Kandivali stations, Rahim Sheikh sexually harassed the woman and snatched her necklace and cellphone. Later, the two men alighted the train at Kandivali.
The woman immediately raised an alarm and the policeman on the duty managed to catch Dikshit.
“The CCTV cameras at the station has given some clue about the molester. We rushed several teams to Kandivali station arrest Rahim Sheikh. We came to know he was a known drug addict and looked for him at public bathrooms he used to frequent in slums,” the report quoted BHaska Pawar, Senior Inspector of Borivali railway police station.
Police arrested Rahim Sheikh on 25 November from Kandivali West.
