Mohali: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said to a group of people including journalists today that people of Punjab should cast their votes on 4 February “assuming that Arvind Kejriwal will be the Chief Minister of Punjab”, adding, “Whoever becomes the Chief Minister, it will be Kejriwal’s responsibility to ensure that all promises made during the election are fulfilled.”

Sisodia’s exact words were:

एक भाई ने अभी पूछा कि  का CM कौन होगा। आप ये मान के चलो कि पंजाब का मुख्यमंत्री तो अरविन्द केजरीवाल होने वाला है। जो भी मुख्यमंत्री बनें, लेकिन यह अरविन्द केजरीवाल की ज़िम्मेदारी है कि जो भी वाडे आपसे करके जा रहे हैं वो पूरे करवाएंगे।”

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal reacted to the statement by saying it was a “conspiracy to foist Kejriwal on Punjab”. Badal Jr further described Kejriwal as “a professional agitationist” who would only pit the State against the Centre.

Further, Badal Jr said, “First, party state convenor and senior-most leader Suchha Singh Chottepur was thrown out of the party as he was a well-known face and could have posed a challenge to Kejriwal. After this, the party scuttled the chances of Bhagwant Mann and Himmat Singh Shergill by making them contest against me and Bikram Singh Majithia, respectively.”

Indian National Congress (INC) leader and probably the party’s chief ministerial candidate Capt Amarinder Singh said that the leader had an “obsessive and abominable lust for Punjab’s chief ministerial position.”

Singh also tweeted:

Most news channels on television made it a subject of debate in the evening. In a fire-fighting mode, an representative said to The Indian Express, “During the 2014 polls and all assembly elections around and after that time, the BJP sought votes for their local units in the name of Narendra Modi. Did that mean he was going to step down from his position as PM and become the CM face in each such state? Then why is Kejriwal being repeatedly tipped to be the Punjab CM? In response to Capt Amarinder Singh’s challenge to contest from any seat in Punjab, Kejriwal has already responded by saying that Singh should fight the Punjab candidates.”
