New Delhi: Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi has quit the Congress. She sent her resignation to party president Rahul Gandhi.
Chaturvedi had stated recently that the party leaders had insulted and offended her and that the party preferred goons over sincere workers. It so happened that eight politicians of the Congress had created a ruckus at a press conference of the party that Chaturvedi had addressed.
While rabble-rousers were all suspended following the incident, the disciplinary committee of the Congress reinstated them soon at the insistence of Jyotiraditya Scindia, Chaturvedi alleged. She believes that the Congress never stood up for her. She says that the Congress defends harassers. She has dropped “Congress spokesperson” from her profile description on Twitter.
The resignation of Chaturvedi is being seen as a major setback to the Congress as she was a popular face of the party on television. She believes that the party cheated her by denying her a ticket. To enrage her even more, she says, they handed a ticket to Urmila Matondkar (alias Maryam Mir).
The readers must be told here that Chaturvedi is domiciled in Mumbai.
Chaturvedi posted her resignation letter on Twitter this afternoon where she wrote, “I don’t even have to remind you of having faced personal threats, slander and abuse and so have my family members including my kids in the course of my service to the party.”
The Twitter message that carries Chaturvedi’s resignation letter reads: “I am absolutely overwhelmed and grateful with the love and support I have got across board from the nation in the past 3 days. I consider myself blessed with this immense outpouring of support. Thank you to all who have been a part of this journey.”

Chaturvedi goes on to state that all these events that occurred in the past few weeks including her experience in Mathura where she was harassed by other party leaders, influenced her decision. Any more time spent in the Congress would only bring damage to her self-respect and dignity, she asserts.

Earlier, sources in the Shiv Sena say Chaturvedi has held a discussion with the Shiv Sena leadership on the prospect of her joining their party. “She would like to retain some room for criticism of the BJP if the need so arises,” a party leader said.
