Calling MK Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse a patriot is costing BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur dear. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi has removed her from the Parliamentary Committee of the Ministry of Defence. Thakur has been told not to attend the meetings of the BJP parliamentary party either during the session.

There are reports quoting sources that the party’s disciplinary committee will take some major action against Pragya Thakur. She may even be expelled from the party.

BJP acting president JP Nadda said that her statement in Parliament yesterday was condemnable. The BJP never supports such a statement or ideology.

In the Lok Sabha, while discussing the SPG Amendment Bill, DMK MP A.K. Raja was referring to a statement of Godse, where the assassin had explained why he killed Gandhi, when Sadhvi Pragya interjected, saying, “You cannot give an example of a patriot.”

Thakur’s statement was expunged from the Lok Sabha records.

Because Pragya gave Priyanka excuse to target PM?

Reacting to the statement of Pragya Thakur, INC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Twitter.

Gandhi-Vadra wrote, “Today, standing in the Parliament of the country, a BJP MP has called Godse a patriot. Now the prime minister (who celebrated Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary grandly) is requested to tell from the heart what his thoughts are about Godse? Mahatma Gandhi is immortal.”

Not the first time, but now it may end differently

This is not the first time Pragya Singh Thakur has described Nathuram Godse as a patriot. Even during the Lok Sabha election campaign, she had called Godse a patriot.

Prime Minister Modi had expressed displeasure over Pragya Singh Thakur’s statement. The prime minister had said that even though the then BJP candidate from Bhopal had apologised, “I will never be able to forgive her from my heart.”

Pragya Singh Thakur may not submit meekly this time it seems, the ‘disciplinary’ actions against her notwithstanding. She has just written on Twitter, “Sometimes a typhoon of lies is so overbearing that a day may appear as a night. But the sun does not lose its light. Do not get bewildered by the momentary typhoon. The light of the sun is permanent. The truth is that yesterday I did not suffer the insult of Udham Singh ji.”

Udham Singh was the revolutionary who assassinated Michael O’Dwyer for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
