Pragya serves breach-of-privilege notice to Rahul

MP from Bhopal Pragya Singh Thakur tried to save her position in the BJP on the one hand and counter-attacked the opposition on the other

A BJP member in the Lok Sabha on Friday demanded that a proposal for a privilege notice against the INC’s No. 2 leader Rahul Gandhi be brought for his statement calling Pragya Thakur a “terrorist”. According to sources, BJP MP Pragya Thakur, while apologising for her Godse remark with a rider to save her position in the BJP, has proposed a breach-of-privilege motion against Rahul Gandhi, maintaining her combative mode.

Rahul Gandhi on his Twitter account called Pragya Thakur a terrorist. Later, talking to the media, he said he stood by his statement.

This refers to the interjection by Pragya S Thakur during a presentation by DMK MP A Raja where he had cited a quote of MK Gandhi’s killer Nathuram Godse and the BJP MP said he should be careful while mentioning patriots. Since Raja had mentioned Udham Singh, who had avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by killing Gen O’Dwyer, too, Pragya tried to get away by saying she had protested because of the ‘casual’ mention of Udham Singh.

A privilege motion can be brought against a Member of Parliament when he/she raises an issue that the House has the first right to deal with outside the House — if a session of Parliament is on those days

Pragya’s remark was expunged from the House record book.

During the continued debate on the SPG Amendment Bill in the House on Wednesday, INC members demanded an unconditional apology from the BJP MP from Bhopal.

Meanwhile, BJP’s Nishikant Dubey requested the Lok Sabha Speaker that a motion for breach of privilege should be brought against Rahul Gandhi for calling a sitting MP a terrorist. He demanded action in this regard from the speaker.

A privilege motion can be brought against a Member of Parliament when he/she raises an issue that the House has the first right to deal with outside the House — if a session of Parliament is on those days. Since Rahul Gandhi spoke of an MP, which he could have done in Parliament, much as the remark would have been uncouth, his tweet qualifies to be treated with a privilege motion.

Dubey quoted a copy of the 20 January 2013 issue of Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana, stating that Nathuram Godse was called a patriot. He said that today the INC had formed an alliance in Maharashtra with the Shiv Sena, which shows the “double standards” of the INC.

Opposition members, including the INC, had raised the issue in the House on Thursday, too.
