Saint Petersburg: Cristiano Ronaldo stole the show with a spectacular hat-trick to ensure that Portugal and Spain shared the spoils in the third match of the FIFA World Cup being played in Russia.
Portugal got the opportunity to take the lead in the early minutes when a charge by Ronaldo met with a tackle that tripped him inside the penalty box, earning his side a penalty kick. Christiano, the only Portuguese player to score at three different World Cups, made no mistake. Portugal 1, Spain 0.
Within the first half, Diego Costa received a volley, with him being the only Spaniard in the Portuguese half. After dribbling away Pepe (Kepler Laveran de Lima Ferreira ComM) Costa scores. Portugal 1, Spain 1.
Within minutes, Ronaldo gave Portugal a lead again — quite against the run of the game.
Costa scored the equaliser while Nacho gave Spain a lead again, redeeming himself after costing his side a penalty kick from where Ronaldo had first scored.
The marvel of the match was reserved for the end. In the extended period, at the 88th minute of the game, a free kick Ronaldo took kept all the Spanish defenders, including their custodian de Gea, spellbound as the ball swerved into the right flank of the goalpost.
Gerard Pique had taken Ronaldo down with a needless foul as the full time approached. The Real Madrid star hit the free kick thus earned perfectly, sealing his hat-trick and making it 3-3.
