Acting on a complaint that members of Hindu Jagran Manch lodged, police in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, registered a case against two Muslim men under the anti-love jihad provisions late last evening. Hindu Jagran Manch activists said they had caught Sohail Khan, a resident of LIG Link Road, Indore, and Hasan Khan, who lives in Krashnabagh Colony, Indore, “red-handed”, molesting two minor Hindu girls in the Jaam Ghat area.

Both the girls hail from the Musakhedi locality in Indore. They had accepted friend requests from the suspects on social mediums. The girls told the police in Mandleshwar that they had come in contact with the suspects through social media.

On Friday, the suspects had asked the girls to accompany them to a nearby café to celebrate the birthday of one of them, but they took them to Jaam Gate in a car against their will.

At Jaam Gate, the men molested the girls and, using their mobile phone devices, clicked pictures of the girls pleading for mercy as they were groped and their clothes pulled. “When we resisted, they threatened us with humiliation. They asked us to embrace Islam and marry them,” the girls said.

Some members of Hindu Jagran Manch who were passing through Jam Ghat came to the rescue of the girls who were crying for help. They questioned the alleged molesters what they were doing with two girls in the otherwise deserted place. The girls broke down, narrating their plight. Later, members handed over the two suspects to cops at the Mandleshwar police station.

Based on the girls’ statement, police registered a case under the Indian Penal Code and MP Religious Freedom Ordinance 2020. Police registered a ‘Zero FIR’ in the matter and handed over the girls to their respective families. Police in India can file a Zero FIR in cases where the crime is committed outside the jurisdiction of the police station that the victim of the crime approaches to lodge a complaint.

Some shopkeepers at Jaam Gate said Sohail had been visiting Jaam Gate with different girls for the past one month. In every visit, after Sohail arrives at Jaam Gate, he molests the girls he brings along and clicks photographs to blackmail them.
