Director- of Home Guards and former Mumbai Police Commissioner appeared at the Thane Nagar police station this morning to record his statements in a case of alleged extortion lodged against him and 27 others.

In a related case, accused then Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh of running an extortion racket in the capital of the state.

Singh reached the police station at 10:30 AM accompanied by his lawyer and an officer of police inspector-rank who is investigating the case and will record his statement in the presence of senior officers.

It was Ketan Tanna who had lodged the FIR against Param Bir Singh. Apart from the disgraced officer, other cops who worked under him in Thane, like encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma and gangster Ravi Pujari, have been accused in the FIR too.

Tanna alleged that he had falsely been implicated in a kidnapping case, following which Sharma and police officers tried to extort money from him to discharge him from this case. Tanna, who as per his FIR has a construction business, said today, “My wife and my son Jay Tanna went to one of the accused and gave Rs 1.25 crore in instalments. The collection agent worked for the police officers. Even he is not arrested.”

The police have arrested two of the accused, identified as Tariq Parveen who is an alleged aide of gangster Dawood Ibrahim, and Sanjay Punamia, in connection with the extortion case.

“I am not satisfied with the police investigations. People have approached me indirectly asking me to withdraw the case. But I have faith in the that all accused will be punished. I have received threats in the past and the police provided me with security.”

Another accused in this case is Bimal Agarwal, a civic contractor, who has lodged the FIR against Param Bir Singh, dismissed API Sachin Vaze and three others at Goregaon police station. This case was transferred to the Crime Branch.

After returning to Mumbai following a Supreme Court order that prevented his arrest, appeared before the Mumbai Crime Branch Unit XI that recorded his statements in the Goregaon case.
