Panipat tanks despite Jat controversy, positive media reviews

Media said Panipat was great; the protest over Surajmal should have heightened audience curiosity, but the film failed to recover its cost

Foreigners who attended Tablighi Jamaat at Nizamuddin Markaz to be tried for violating visa rule

Sirf News has accessed from the police the records of many Tablighi Jamaat associates who have returned to or been to the Northeast and non-Muslims who passed through the area and returned to the states of the region

There are few films that fail to bring audiences to theatres even after getting positive reviews in the mainstream media. Arjun Kapoor and Kriti Sanon’s recent release Panipat gets that dubious distinction. The box office collection of Panipat made at a cost of about Rs 70 crore exemplifies this. Panipat has earned only Rs 22.25 crore in 5 days.

At the same time, Pati, Patni aur Woh, released the same day as Panipat, is going to cross the Rs 50 crore mark in earnings.

Even controversy did not help Panipat

Padmaavat, Kabir Singh, Jodhaa Akbar and Bajirao Mastani are all films that stirred the hornet’s nest. Different communities poured into the streets to protest against the content of each. But each of them created a buzz among people and did brisk business at the box office.

Many a time, filmmakers concoct controversies to increase people’s curiosity about a film. For example, Sirf News had received an article questioning the content of Padmaavat (then conceived as Padmavati) even before the shooting of that film had begun. How did Karni Sena or any part of Rajasthan know what Sanjay Leela Bhansali was up to at that stage? Have a look:

But all such manoeuvres proved futile Panipat. Ashutosh Gowariker is accused of misrepresenting the characters of Maharaja Surajmal and Ahmed Shah Abdali.

The Panipat trailer (below) featuring Arjun Kapoor was not liked at all. Casting of lead actors also raised questions. But the reviews that the film received after its release shut up many. Critics gave the movie three-and-a-half and more stars. Direction, acting and screenplay were highly praised. But word-of-mouth did not have a significant impact on the business of the film.

The biggest obstacle in the way of earning of Panipat is the romantic comedy film Pati Patni Aur Woh. The audience seems to be preferring a comedy to a period drama at the moment.

The second major reason is understood to be the low star power of the lead actor of Panipat. Arjun Kapoor’s previous films have been flops. This has had a big impact on his fan following and star power. Perhaps that’s why the number of people watching the film in the name of Arjun is low.

This weekend may see Panipat‘s earnings go up to Rs 4.12 crore. But this Friday, Rani Mukherjee’s Mardaani 2 and Emraan Hashmi’s The Body are being released, too, while Panipat has just this weekend to earn. Thereafter, it will find it difficult to stand in competition with other big films at the box office.
