Padmaavat: 50 supporters of Karni Sena detained

Mumbai: Police today detained around 50 supporters of Karni Sena in the city for protesting against controversial film Padmaavat, which is scheduled to hit the screens tomorrow, an official said.

The film has been facing protests by the Karni Sena and other fringe groups over allegations that historical facts were distorted in the movie.

“We have detained around 50 supporters of Karni Sena so far in different parts of Mumbai. They were taken into custody when they gathered for protesting against the film,” a senior police official said.

More people are likely to be taken into preventive custody, he said.

However, in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur, agitated members of a fringe outfit barged into a mall demanding a complete ban on the film. “They tore film posters, damaged property and manhandled the mall staff”, Station House Officer (SHO), Kakadev, Ajay Kumar Singh said.

In Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, at least 30 motorcycles were set on and several other vehicles parked outside three city malls were damaged by protesters opposing the release of the controversial film, police said.

Members of some fringe outfits held a protest in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal where they burnt Bhansali’s effigy.

The film, starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, and Shahid Kapoor, is based on the saga of the historic 13th battle between Maharaja Ratan Singh and his army of Mewar and Sultan of Delhi.

The film has been facing protests by the Karni Sena and other fringe groups over allegations that historical facts were distorted in the flick.

The has earlier paved the way for the all- India release of Padmaavat on 25 January and stayed notifications and orders issued by Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat — all ruled by the BJP — prohibiting exhibition of the film in their states.

The movie, which was earlier named Padmavati and was slated for a 1 December release, will now hit theatres worldwide tomorrow.
