In the middle of the campaign for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) election, a war of words has erupted between All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Tejasvi Surya.
After Owaisi slammed the BJP, accusing it of “breaking” the unity of the country, the national president of BJP Yuva Morcha said that every single Rohingya refugee that the AIMIM chief “tries to protect will be thrown out”.
In an apparent reference to Babri Masjid demolitions, Owaisi had said, “You (BJP) destroy mosques, but we are the ones who are collecting Rs 10 crore for a temple.”
Addressing a public meeting at Farhat Nagar in Azampura Divison, the Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad had said, “In Telangana Assembly, (AIMIM leader) Akbaruddin Owaisi has asked for Rs 10 crore for a temple. The chief minister was shocked, the BJP was distressed. People of all faith live here and we want that they should follow their religion. It is the thinking of the Majlis. I will not allow the situation of the 1980s and 1990s to be repeated here.”
The firebrand BJP MP Bengaluru South, reacted to the comment, taking potshots at Owaisi over Rohingya infiltrators. “Every single infiltrator living illegally inside the country will be removed. There is no doubt about it. Let Owaisi not be in his Disneyland, dreamland. Every single Rohingya that he tries to protect will be thrown out by us,” the BJP MP said.
On his proposal to change the name of Hyderabad to Bhagya Nagar, Surya alleged that due to Owaisi’s politics Hindus are moving out of old Hyderabad and settling in the new part of the city.
“In old Hyderabad, people are moving out from most Hindu colonies. Why is this happening? Why are Hindus are forced to come out from old colonies? They have come out and settled in the new part of the city. Who is responsible for this politics? It is Owaisi,” Surya asked.
